Acupressure Points for Cancer Treatment Nausea Relief

A complementary approach to managing nausea during cancer therapy

By Kayhan Kaptan - Medical Physics, Quality Control, Data Science and Automation

Cancer treatment can bring many challenges, and nausea is frequently a difficult side effect to manage. While pharmacological interventions are standard, many individuals explore complementary therapies like acupressure to alleviate their symptoms. Acupressure, an ancient practice involving applying pressure to specific points on the body, can be a valuable addition to conventional anti-nausea medications.

This guide details effective acupressure points for managing cancer treatment-related nausea, offering a step-by-step approach to locate and stimulate them.

Understanding Acupressure for Nausea Relief

Acupressure is based on the principle that applying pressure to specific points can stimulate the body’s natural healing processes and restore balance. For nausea, particular points are believed to influence the digestive system and overall well-being, helping to reduce feelings of sickness.

Key Acupressure Points for Nausea Relief

Here are the primary acupressure points recommended for alleviating nausea during cancer treatment:

1. Pericardium 6 (P6) or Neiguan Point

The P6 point, also known as Neiguan, is one of the most thoroughly studied acupressure points for nausea relief, particularly effective for delayed nausea that might occur days after chemotherapy.

How to Locate P6:

  • Step 1: Place three finger widths (your own fingers) below the wrist crease on the inner forearm.
  • Step 2: The point is located precisely between the two prominent tendons in the center of your forearm. You can feel these tendons by flexing your wrist slightly.

How to Stimulate P6:

  • Apply gentle, steady pressure to this point using your thumb or forefinger.
  • Massage in a circular motion for a few minutes.
  • Repeat on the other wrist if desired.

2. Stomach 36 (ST36) or Zusanli Point

ST36 is another beneficial point that can help reduce the severity of nausea during and after treatment, and it also generally supports digestive health.

How to Locate ST36:

  • Step 1: Locate the bottom of your kneecap.
  • Step 2: Place four finger widths (your own fingers) below the bottom of your kneecap.
  • Step 3: Move one finger width towards the outer edge of your shin bone (tibia). The point is located in the small indentation there.

How to Stimulate ST36:

  • Apply firm pressure to this point using your thumb or knuckles.
  • Massage for a few minutes.
  • Repeat on the other leg.

3. Auricular Acupressure Points

Specific zones on the ear have been shown to help reduce nausea and vomiting when used in conjunction with standard anti-nausea medications. These are often targeted in clinical settings.

How to Stimulate Auricular Points:

  • While precise location requires professional guidance, a general gentle massage along the rim and outer bowl of the ear can promote relaxation and potentially help.
  • For targeted treatment, consult with a qualified acupuncturist or healthcare provider.

4. Yintang (Between the Eyebrows)

While not directly targeting nausea, stimulating Yintang can help alleviate anxiety and stress, which often exacerbate feelings of sickness.

How to Locate Yintang:

  • The Yintang point is located directly between your eyebrows, at the root of your nose.

How to Stimulate Yintang:

  • Gently massage this area with your thumb or forefinger in a circular motion. This can be very relaxing and soothing.

5. General Relaxation Points

Massaging the top of the head or around the ears can also promote overall relaxation and help alleviate symptoms. These are not specific acupressure points but general areas for comfort.

How to Massage:

  • Use your fingertips to gently massage your scalp and behind your ears. This can be done at any time to induce a sense of calm.

Important Considerations

  • Complementary, Not Replacement: Acupressure is not a substitute for medical treatment. It should always be used in conjunction with conventional anti-nausea medications and under the guidance of your healthcare team.
  • Effectiveness: Applying manual pressure to these points tends to be more effective than using acupressure wristbands for some individuals, though both methods can provide relief.
  • Professional Guidance: For personalized advice and precise point location, it is highly recommended to consult healthcare providers or qualified therapists, especially those specializing in oncology supportive care. Many cancer centers offer resources or referrals to licensed acupuncturists.
  • Individual Experience: Everyone’s experience with cancer treatment and its side effects is unique. Discuss any complementary therapies with your care team to ensure they align with your overall treatment plan.

By incorporating acupressure into your nausea management strategy, you may find a safe and effective way to enhance comfort and improve your quality of life during a challenging time.
